Atlantis is a large hospital in Lagos and looks impressive at first glance, but my experience was disappointing when it came to handling complex cases. Once things went beyond basic care, the doctors I needed were unavailable and I was referred elsewhere.
My concern is not referral itself, but where I was sent. Dr. Atinuke Uwajeh referred me to a hospital that was clearly not equipped to manage a serious case, and the outcome was fatal. This is difficult to understand when hospitals like Evercare, with stronger specialist capacity and better-equipped facilities, are available.
No hospital can have every specialist, and that is understandable. What matters is honesty and sound judgment. When a case is complex or life-threatening, a doctor’s responsibility is to guide patients to the best possible care. That did not seem to happen in my case.
In a country where medical outcomes already depend heavily on access and decision-making, anything less feels reckless. Patients and families deserve transparency, competence, and referrals that prioritize survival and quality of care.
